George and Susan Roth admit that buying land more than 2,400 miles from their Connecticut home was an impulsive decision at the end of an idyllic vacation. “When we started the trip, we had no thought whatsoever about buying property,” Mr. Roth said. “It was just a vacation.”

But during that 1995 trip, when the Roths saw the two-acre site on Salt Spring Island, with a private cove and a sweeping view of the ocean and forest, “that was it,” he said.

“When we got back to Connecticut, people thought we were absolutely crazy. They said: ‘You bought land where?’ ”
