As wealthy foreign buyers snap up more and more luxury homes in Canada, high-net-worth Canadians are similarly showing strong interest in purchasing multimillion-dollar residences abroad. But while their sights were once set on a French château, perhaps, or a Tuscan villa, the trend now is towards buying in the United States.

“We've really seen a fall-off in buying in Europe because of all the confusion over the past 12 months or so,” says Don Campbell, president of Abbotsford, B.C.-based Cutting Edge Research Inc. and the author of five best-selling books on real estate investing.

With so much volatility in Europe, especially in Spain, Portugal and…

Steve Laver, COO of Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, talks about the luxury realty market, his new role, and his move from Intrawest.

It’s been a dramatic few years in the real estate business, particularly at the luxury end of the spectrum. For Steve Laver, former president of Intrawest ULC’s Playground Destination Properties, the roller coaster of the recession was made even steeper and faster by the fact that it followed Intrawest’s 2006 blockbuster sale to Fortress Investment Group LLC, a deal he helped craft. Now at Sotheby’s in Vancouver, he is focused on a new batch of big deals, this time as the sales and marketing force behind projects such as the new Four Seasons in Bangalore, India.

What do you like about the real estate business?

The energy, the whole transactional nature of it, doing deals. It’s always interesting; it’s always creative. You’re matching needs on one side with…

Sotheby's International Realty® Expands to Calgary

Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Enters Calgary Market

Alberta is expected to be one of the best economic performers in the world this year, with the Royal Bank of Canada pegging GDP growth at 4.3% and the Conference Board of Canada predicting that the province will lead Canada in growth for 2011. With Albertan homebuyers driving demand in key Western Canadian real estate markets and with investment opportunities abounding in the province itself, Sotheby’s International Realty Canada has expanded into Calgary.

The new Calgary office has launched at a time when improvements in the energy sector are anticipated to…

Four Seasons homes in Bangalore herald a ritzy real estate trend

I do have high standards where my living spaces are concerned,” says Raj Chawla, who is among the first set of clients to buy a Four Seasons branded residence in Bangalore. A two-bedroom apartment on the 24th floor of the building that will also house the Four Seasons hotel will be Chawla’s retirement home. “By the time I am 50, I hope,” laughs the 43-year-old, Singapore-based investment banker.

For Chawla, a Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts regular, the choice was a simple one. “Though I don’t live in Bangalore, there is an assurance that I won’t be short-changed because of the brand…

$12M penthouse sold in a few months

It took about two years to sell the $15-million penthouse, taxes included, at the storied Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Yet the top penthouse at the Chateau Maplewood, listed at $12 million plus taxes, has sold in just a few months.

Liza Kaufman, listing agent for both luxury condo projects, wouldn't disclose the exact price for the Maplewood penthouse, a 6,000-square foot condo with an expansive terrace and 12-foot-high ceilings in the former mother house of the Soeurs des Saints Noms de Jesus et de Marie.

The new 142-unit Maplewood project is being developed at a time when the Montreal luxury condo market has shifted to one favouring buyers, figures from the Greater Montreal Real Estate Board show.

In 2000, 212 luxury condos (then…

After years of being a devoted mother to her children, Liza Kaufman decided, on a whim, to accompany her friend to a real estate course.

"My kids had graduated, so I thought why not take the course, it would help me in my own real estate investments," Kaufman said. "But I never imagined getting to where I am today."

She quickly excelled in the program and has since become an internationally recognized expert in marketing luxury…

Ritz: highest-priced condo ever in Quebec

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 at 12:01pm. 1650 Views, 0 Comments.

NOTE: The following article appeared in the Montreal Gazette, but we'd like to correct the selling price as being just over $14 million plus taxes as opposed to the reported $13 million.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~
The sale of the penthouse at the Montreal Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Residences might be the highest priced residential transaction ever in Quebec.
But despite selling for $13 million plus taxes, the opulent penthouse at the historic Sherbrooke St. hotel is significantly less expensive than a luxurious unit with similar amenities in Vancouver, or Toronto.
In Toronto's Yorkville district, a 9,000-square-foot penthouse at the Four Seasons hotel and residences -with separate living quarters for staff -is still on the market for a staggering $30 million.
It's the…
If you’re interested in owning the most coveted piece of property at Sun Peaks Resort, you’re in luck — it’s for sale.
But, bring your chequebook and make sure you have a collection of zeroes because this winter cabin doesn’t come cheap.
Last week, Sotheby’s International Realty Canada listed the most expensive pad at Sun Peaks to date, a five-bedroom home for $4.3 million.
Located on Douglas Court, the 4,500 square-foot full timber frame home is the ultimate in winter luxury.
It comes fully furnished and has wine-tasting and theatre rooms, an outdoor hot tub and a grand piano.
But, as Liz Forster, managing broker at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, explained to KTW, the hefty price tag is all about the view.
She said it’s…
