Sales in Montréal Area Reach 2008 Levels

A couple of million dollars can still buy a lot of things these days, but it wouldn’t cover the cost of the most expensive pad at Sun Peaks Resort.
A home at the resort recently fetched $2.2 million — a record for residential property.
Liz Forster, managing broker at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, told KTW the property was listed for only a month before it was snapped up.
So, what comes with all those zeros?
At 3,500 square feet, the home includes radiant in-floor heating, high-end appliances and a unique timber frame — not to mention a ski hill as a backyard.
“It’s actually a cross between a piece of art and a building,” Forster said.
The previously most expensive house at Sun Peaks sold for $1.5 million in 2006.
The $2.2-million house is located on Sundance Drive and backs onto the Gentle Giant green ski run.
The new owners don’t live in the Kamloops area, but they are from Canada.
While the $2-million price tag is a first for the resort, it may not be the last.
Sun Peaks was named among the top 10 resorts in North America in a Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Poll in 2009.
Forster said people from around the world are looking seriously into purchasing property at the resort, listing off buyers from Australia, the United Kingdom and across North America.
“This resort appeals to people on a very wide basis,” she said.
“Where people can come and spend quality time in their own recreational homes.”
That demand is spurring developers to spend more on construction and build high-end properties.
Forster said it’s become a good investment to put the extra money in to construction.
And, compared to other world-class resorts, Forster said Sun Peaks remains a relative bargain, with some apartment units going for as little as $100,000.
